If you know me even a little bit, you know my deep, deep obsession with matcha. Like, if we went to a coffee shop together and they didn't offer a matcha latte, I'd probably not get anything... or maybe I'd get a hazelnut latte if I'm feeling it. But matcha is the top choice always. So when I saw this dalgona coffee trend going around on social media (*cough* TikTok *cough*), I wasn't initially on board. And then the best of the best friends, MacKenzie, sent me a TikTok where someone was making dalgona MATCHA. I instantly went to make some myself.
After you're finished mixing, you just pour it over a glass of ice and your milk of choice. The first couple of times I used the Silk unsweetened coconut milk and found that the matcha was too overpowering and bitter. I normally use Silk original but it literally been sold out at the store every time we go to get groceries. I don't understand these weird runs on items that are normally well stocked during non-pandemic times. You people weren't all drinking coconut milk before so what's the hype now? ANYWAYS, they were sold out again this week when we went to the store so I decided to pick up some So Delicious vanilla coconut milk. I thought maybe it would help counteract the bitterness of the matcha. It definitely did just that. I would say we ventured over into too sweet with this round. I like my matcha sweetened, but I still want it to taste like matcha.
While I think this is a fun little trend and a different way of making matcha, I'm going to stick with my matcha bowl and whisk and keep making my lattes the traditional way... at least after I go buy more matcha because I used the rest of it on this drink.
Have you tried the dalgona drink trend? Did you like it? Let me know what you think of it down in the comment section!
